Two Guys Make Chinese opened its doors on September 21, 2014 in the Townhouse dorm on Quinnipiac University’s York Hill campus.
Owned and operated by Quinnipiac alums Jason Davis and Josh Brewer, Two Guys Make Chinese is free dining experience that mimics authentic American-Chinese cuisine with food that is made from scratch.
Two Guys Make Chinese has held dinners in Clinton, Hamden and Farmington, Connecticut as well as Boston, Massachusetts.
While it’s now a successful traveling restaurant, Two Guys Make Chinese began as a prank during Jason and Josh’s junior year of college when they created a fake menu based on their collective love for Chinese food.
The final product featured different descriptions for the same menu item: General Tso’s chicken. Instead of using photos of Chinese food, they added photos of pizza, pasta and salad. And to top it all off, they printed their roommate Adam’s phone number in large font under the words “To Order, Please Call.”
They printed out 50 copies in full color and slid them under people’s doors. Jason and Josh created a Facebook account for a pseudo-Quinnipiac student named Mike Bronson and used that account to post in various Quinnipiac University student groups as a way to promote the dining experience.
Equipped with a cover photo of Quinnipiac’s beautiful quad and a profile picture of an orientation group, Mike Bronson’s profile was indistinguishable from that of a real person. While the fake restaurant garnered interest from students on social media and across Quinnipiac’s campus, Jason and Josh did actually begin cooking.
On the first night of operation, Jason and Josh spent upwards of 11 hours shopping, preparing, cooking and cleaning. Two Guys Make Chinese served a total of six guests.
During one Two Guys Make Chinese dinner, one customer let it slip that Adam’s number was on the menu they received. Adam, who was in attendance that night, paused and exclaimed, “so that’s why I’ve been getting so many calls!?”
Over the next several years, Two Guys Make Chinese held dinners in several locations across the Northeast. Jason and Josh pride themselves in offering an authentic Chinese restaurant experience wherever they are at no cost to their guests. Most dinners are served with fortune cookies and at least one homemade dessert.
